Hold off on those big dinner plans this week until you fix that leaky toilet.

Our local water company Suez wants to remind you about the importance of finding and repairing water leaks as well as taking simple steps to reduce unnecessary water loss during Fix-A-Leak Week, starting Monday, March 14th through Sunday, March 20th, 2022.

The Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) annual campaign is a reminder to check plumbing fixtures inside and outside of homes and commercial properties in order to reduce water loss through leaky faucets, valves and water pipes that can lead to costly water bills.

“Although this week-long event is a reminder to help protect our Earth’s most precious resource, everyone can find and fix leaks inside and outside to save valuable water and money throughout the year,” said Chris Graziano, vice president and GM of SUEZ, the local water company. “WaterSense, a voluntary partnership program sponsored by the EPA, is a valuable resource that our customers can use in saving water with water-efficient products, he added.

Customers can follow a few simple steps to find and fix leaks in homes and businesses:

  • Check toilets for leaks by placing a few drops of food coloring into the tank then waiting a few minutes to see if color appears in the bowl prior to flushing. If there is color, there is a leak.
  • Twist on a new WaterSense-labeled faucet aerator or showerhead and tighten hose and pipe connections.
  • Replace fixtures if necessary with WaterSense-labeled models which are independently certified to use less water and perform as well or better than standard models.

The EPA estimates that minor water leaks account for more than 1 trillion gallons of water wasted each year in U.S. homes, and 10 percent of homes have leaks that waste over 90 million gallons of water per day.
