Former Deputy Mayor Richard Mecca is Lost

Richard Mecca Rye City CouncilRichard Mecca, a 42 year resident of Rye who was deeply engaged in the community, has passed after a battle with cancer. A full obituary will be shared once available.

In a statement, Mayor Josh Cohn and the City Council said “Richard Mecca was a great colleague and contributor, and we miss him.” The City Council meeting scheduled for next Wednesday, April 20th, will be rescheduled as it coincides with Mecca’s wake.

Mecca resigned as City Councilman and Deputy Mayor on January 5th due to his illness. A Rye resident since since 1980, Mecca was an electrician who owned Mecca Electric in Rye for many years, and served as an electrical inspector for the City of White Plains.

He served on the Rye Flood Advisory Committee, the Rye Planning Commission, the Rye Board of Architectural Review, and Mayor Steve Otis’ Task Force on Master Planning, among other committees. Mecca was a long-time member of the Rye Fire Department.

The wake is scheduled for this coming Wednesday from 4:00pm to 9:00pm at Graham’s Funeral Home and a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at the Church of the Resurrection on Thursday at 10:00am.
