NYACK RED HAWKS @ RYE GARNETS  – FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 23 @ 7:00PM @ NUGENT STADIUM

People ask the Old Garnet many questions about Rye Garnet football lore.

This week’s most FAQ: “Is Rye playing the Nyack Indians or Nyack Red Hawks this Friday night”?

The Answer:

Mimicking the growing movement in professional and collegiate athletics to politically correct team names and mascots, local high schools have followed that trend, witness the Ossining Indians, who became the Ossining O and is now known as the Ossining Pride, and the John Jay – Cross River Indians now competing as the Wolves. Following these actions and St John’s University who also become the Red Hawks, the Nyack Board of Education in one 2019 motion transformed the Nyack Indians into the Nyack Red Hawks.

Talk about “too close for comfort” that was certainly the case last week at Yorktown. The Garnets survived the Huskers, but only by the width of some early fall corn silk.

RYE’S GARNET & BLACK HOST the BLACK & RED of the NYACK RED HAWKS (nee Indians)

In Rye’s home opener the Garnets host long-ago Rockland County adversary, the Nyack Indians, now known as the Red Hawks. Teepee tales tell us many moons ago these braves fearfully populated the Garnet schedules, but with superior weaponry Rye dodged the arrows remaining in comfortable control, 13-5-0 (.722).

The Red Hawks soar into Nugent trying their best to replicate Brewster and Yorktown and upset Rye, ranked #7 county-wide by the Journal News. Your Garnets avoid the necessity of a third nail-biting comeback win, and on Friday night, the Garnets shed the “Cardiac Kids” label with a 35-6 caging of the Red Hawks.

Since Friday’s game is the first of only three regular season home games, please support the RHS Senior Class (Class of 2023) by purchasing snacks, beverages and eats from their food stand at the north end of the Rye stadium bleachers. At the same location the Rye Football Association has Garnet Gear inventory available at the Garnet G tent. Also JV parent representatives will mingle in the stands selling 50/50 Raffle Tickets. Take a chance by buying an arm’s length of tickets – after all the odds of winning are better than those of MegaMillion or PowerBall.
