RYE GARNETS @ YORKTOWN HUSKERS – FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 16 @ 7:00PM
People ask the Old Garnet many questions about Rye Garnet football lore.
This week’s most FAQ: “Was Rye’s second half comeback against Brewster the largest deficit ever overcome by the Garnets”?
The Answer:
If not the largest turnaround, Rye’s comeback victory over the Brewster Bears would definitely rank in the Top-5. I recall a game or two from the late 1950’s/early 1960’s where the Garnets stormed back from significant deficits in games versus Mamaroneck and Bronxville. Also the thirty-four (34) second-half points scored last Friday by the Garnets would have to be a Rye record if not #1 then in the Top-10 ever.
Garnets travelling to the first three 2022 season contests are seeing their odometers spin like Foxwoods slots with northern trips to Cornwall, Brewster and Yorktown. In the long and a-maize-ing history of Rye football the Garnets never germinated the YORKTOWN cornHUSKERS until the 2015 planting season. But what a bumper crop of games have been harvested almost annually since, whether it be regular season or post-season play.
The Huskers lose their luster unable to muster a talented cluster to backstop their pre-game bluster, buster. Mortgage the farm, sell the tractors, it’s a barnburner versus the Green and White. Rye harvests corn and it’s the Garnets plowing the Huskers 27-14. You can put all your popcorn on it.
