On Tuesday at Rye City Hall, 25-year Rye Fire Department veteran John Thompson was sworn in as the department’s newest Lieutenant. The position opened when Lieutenant and storyteller Andy Northshield announced last week he was retiring.

“There is nothing more appropriate that having [John] in a leadership role,” said Rye FD Captain John McDwyer. Rye City Manager Greg Usry added “Congratulations to you, congratulations to your family. It is a great day.”

The FD will now hire a new firefighter, the position that opened upon Thompson’s promotion. Once that is complete, the department will be fully staffed at 21 people with a captain, four lieutenants and 16 firefighters.

Thompson joined the Rye FD in February 1998. He went on to attend the Westchester County Career Fire Academy where he was voted class representative and graduated at the top of his class. A Rye and sound shore native, Thompson moved to Rye from Larchmont at the age of three, and graduated from Rye High School in 1987.

He matriculated to SUNY Cortland where he earned his bachelor’s degree in 1992. After graduation, John worked as an exercise physiologist at Therafit, a corporate fitness and rehabilitation facility in White Plains.

His eldest daughter is a senior at Gettysburg College, his middle daughter is a junior at Boston University and the youngest is a junior at Brewster High School. When John is not spending time with his family, he enjoys hunting and fishing.
