Considering a move to independent living can be daunting. What most people are after is a community where they will feel engaged and welcomed. When looking at options, consider the three Ps: place, programming and people.

“It’s not about retiring, it’s about re-engaging and revitalizing,” says Christa Daniello, vice president of sales at The Osborn. “It is really the alchemy of place, programming and people that creates a community.”

The Osborn has worked hard to create a community that celebrates all three Ps: place, programming and people.

Place

The Osborn is a 56-acre campus in the heart of Rye and the only private arboretum in Westchester County with over 1,000 trees and 115 different species.

  • Active lifestyle amenities include a pool, putting green, pickleball, walking paths, a gym and more.
  • Back to school amenities include three libraries, an art studio and an ongoing lecture series.
  • Tasty amenities are the multiple dining options (including casual and formal choices) under the direction of a Culinary Institute of America educated executive chef.
  • Cultural amenities include a world class auditorium, a movie cinema, and outdoor concert series.

People

Most importantly there are hundreds of residents that call The Osborn home, including those that enjoy the 188 independent living units. It is these residents that provide much of the context to the place and the programming to create the community that is The Osborn.

In addition, there are over 400 employees of The Osborn. A full 17% have worked with residents for over 20 years and over half have five or more years of service.

And finally, local Westchester residents come onto campus for various public events from cocktail & conversation lecture series to the annual Community Easter Egg Hunt. There are many intergenerational programs with The Rye School District and the adjacent Osborn Elementary School including the annual Flag Day Ceremony and Halloween Parade. Local community members visit campus for holiday events, plays and musical concerts. Even Santa visits The Osborn campus.

  • The French Club, where residents learn the French language, is taught by a former high school French teacher.
  • Meet Our Neighbors is a resident-led interview program featuring residents and staff and broadcast on The Osborn’s private TV network, Channel 591.
  • An art history group is hosted by a former NYU art history professor.
  • The campus librarian (there are three libraries) runs a monthly book club.
  • Pop-up cocktail parties go from one apartment to another before dinner.

If you don’t want to retire, but you want to re-engage and revitalize, consider the three Ps when you look for the community that is right for you or your family member: place, programming and people.
