In Memory: Peter J. Sinnott III, Age 82

Obituary - Peter J. Sinnott III -- 2Peter J. Sinnott III, 82, passed away peacefully at home on April 12th surrounded by his family. He was a long-time resident of Rye, New York, where he was a dedicated parishioner at the Church of the Resurrection.

Peter was born on January 20, 1941 and grew up in Larchmont, New York. He graduated from The Canterbury School, attended Georgetown University, and graduated from Babson College. Upon graduation, he joined the Sinnott Company, a real estate management, development, and construction concern founded by his grandfather in 1911 in the Bronx, ultimately becoming president in 1977. It was under Peter’s management that Sinnott Company became the first contractor in NYC to do a solar project, as well as being the first contractor in Westchester County to partner with Con Ed on a solar energy project.

Peter will be remembered by all as a force of nature with an indomitable spirit and zest for life. He was well known for his dancing at social events and was a wonderful athlete who excelled in swimming, squash, tennis, paddle tennis, golf, and skiing. In 2010, Peter became a heart transplant recipient and continued his active lifestyle. Six weeks after his surgery, he was skiing at his much-loved Stratton Mountain, and just 11 months after receiving his new heart, he completed the NYC Marathon which he participated in with his heart surgeon and his son, Peter IV. He was an active and longtime member of The Apawamis Club in Rye, NY, where he was on the Board of Governors and served as chairman of countless committees over the years. He was also a member of The United States Seniors’ Golf Association. In addition, with his late wife, Rosemary, Peter was a past Co-Chair of United Way of Rye, the $2 Million Rye Free Reading Room building campaign, and the nationally-recognized Rye Invitational Paddle Tennis Tournament.

He is survived by his son, Peter IV (Erin), and his grandson, Michael, of Rye, NY, as well as his sisters, Karen Sinnott of New Rochelle, NY, and Maura Sinnott Allen of Rochester, NY. Peter was predeceased by his beautiful and loving wife of 52 years, Rosemary, his twin sisters, Ann Fleming and Barbara Shea, and his parents, Peter Sinnott Jr. and Janice Sinnott O’Neal.

A celebration of his life will be held on April 21st at 10 a.m. at the Church of the Resurrection in Rye. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Peter’s memory may be made to the Rye Free Reading Room.
