A “grandma scam” of a local elderly resident is over. After a multi-month investigation, the Rye PD arrested a Port Chester man on Tuesday.

Last fall, on October 1st, an elderly resident contacted the Rye PD to report that she had just been the victim of fraud. She had received a phone call from a male claiming to be her grandson. The caller told her that he was in legal trouble in another state and he required substantial funds to be released from jail. The victim, concerned for her grandson’s well-being, agreed to pay the money. A short time later, a suspect arrived at her home and collected $9,500 dollars in “bail money” from the victim.

Over the next several months, a City of Rye detective continued to gather evidence, which resulted in a summary arrest being made on the suspect, Jorge Luis Duche, 33, of Port Chester. Duche was placed under arrest at his place of business on Tuesday, April 18th. He is currently being held at the Westchester County Correctional Facility.

The Grandma scam is a common fraud which targets elderly victims. Suspects who prey on these victims are aware that the elderly are often more trusting of people, have utmost love for their grandchildren, and have access to retirement savings, making them vulnerable to these types of crimes. It is recommended that if you or your loved one receives a phone call of this nature, to immediately hang up and contact the City of Rye Police Department for assistance.

Rye PD reminds you that booking charges are merely accusations and the defendant(s) are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
