Boys Varsity Tennis Are League Champs as They Tame the Tigers
Rye Boys Varsity Tennis ended the regular season on Thursday as league champs as they tamed the White Plains Tigers, taking the away match 6 – 1.
“With some change-ups in the White Plains lineup, Rye had some competitive matches for their final match of the regular season,” said Rye Boys Varsity Tennis Coach Sue Dickson. “Nicolas Echlov had to face the strongest player in Section 1, Callum Markowitz. This was Rye’s only loss. The singles Matthew Templeman, Alex Gordon, and Ty Bibas won in straight sets giving up only three games between the three of them. Alex Gordon has played both the singles two and three spots all season and is undefeated. This is rare! He will double up with Nicolas Echlov for the Sectional Doubles Tournament on Saturday.”
“Matches were close in the doubles, two of them went to the third set super tiebreaker. Henry Bagley and Henry Paul, (one doubles) played Jaden Ritterman and Milo Kris,” continued Dickson. “After losing the first set 3-6, they came back in the second set 6-3. The super tiebreaker was close; Rye won with a Bagley overhead smash 10-8. A fitting victory point. Jiawen Hao and Gunnar Wey (second doubles) played a close match as well. They lost the first set 6-7 (3-7 tiebreaker). Determined, they won the second set 6-3. The third set tiebreaker was a decisive 10-4 Rye victory. Third doubles, Luke Gordon and Filip Glitterstam won 6-4, 6-4. They finished off the White Plains duo Mason Kincheloe and Max Pollio with a Glistterstam overhead smash. It was a competitive match overall and the team finished off a great season while improving each and every match. They have been a cohesive group and a joy to coach.”
Next up is the individual sectional tournament on Saturday.
