In Memory: Marylen Arlene Garvey, Age 87
Marylen Arlene Garvey, age 87, of Selbyville, DE, passed peacefully on Wednesday, June 14, 2023.
Marylen was raised in Rye, NY, daughter of Leonard and Marie Schindo. She was a Rye High School alumna, head cheerleader, and future husband/H.S. sweetheart Michael Garvey was the captain of the football team. Marylen literally made a splash when they were picked for a photo for the local newspaper, of Mike splashing a bucket of water on Marylen at the pool, they were inseparable after that.
Marylen worked at the FBI while Mike, went to college. After graduation and becoming an Officer in the United States Marine Corps, they were married on December 30, 1956, and moved to Hawaii. Marylen was the ultimate homemaker/interior designer transforming a house into a warm, inviting home. Marylen settled in Ellicott City, MD with her family for many years, becoming their hometown. In their retirement, Marylen and Mike moved to Myrtle Beach, SC, and that was the vacation spot for family for many fun-filled years.
A few years after Mike’s passing, Marylen reconnected with an old friend, John McKernan, and they had several enjoyable years together. A few of Marylen’s favorite pastimes included bridge, reading, puzzles, and she was very active in the church. Marylen was a loving and nurturing wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother.
Marylen was predeceased by her parents and beloved husband, Michael L. Garvey. She is survived by her 4 children: Donna, Stephen, Michael, and Virginia, 7 grandchildren, 1 great grandchild, her brother, Peter, 4 nieces/nephews. She was loved deeply and will be sorely missed by all.
Marylen will be interred with her husband, Michael L. Garvey at Arlington National Cemetery at a time to be determined.
