After a successful season this spring, varsity softball head coach Alex Tejera recently announced two 2023 Rye Girls Varsity Softball MVPs: Dylan Deertz and Ashley Kessner.
Deertz and Kessner were both senior captains for the Garnets, and they excelled tremendously both on and off the field.
“They led a young team (three seniors) to an impressive 12–9 record and a win in the opening round of the playoffs,” Tejera said. “Their leadership and on-field presence will be deeply missed. They have been a pleasure to coach these past years, and I wish them nothing but the best in the future.”
Deertz manned the hot corner at third base and hit over .400 en route to earning All-League and honorable mention All-Section honors.
“Dylan played an amazing 3rd base and provided key hits throughout the season including a HR in the playoffs,” Tejera said.
Kessner was equally crucial to the Garnets’ success, both offensively and defensively. The senior was awarded with All-League and All-Section honors.
“Ashley also batted over .400 and played a terrific CF all season,” Tejera said. “She also hit a playoff HR to help us win our opening round game.”
