Not so carefree.

On Friday evening a boat from the Carefree Boat Club’s Rye Boat Basin location with two individuals aboard ran aground on the rocks off the Shenorock Shore Club on Milton Point. Carefree is a boating membership club that offers “luxury valet boating” without the hassles of owning a boat.

Rye FD was dispatched at 8:00pm, just after sunset. Once on location, incident commander Lieutenant John Cotter determined it was best to launch the department’s inflatable boat from the beach of Shenorock Shore Club.

The boat in distress was roughly 100 yards off Shenorock’s pier in the Long Island Sound. Firefighter Ryan Iarocci and Firefighter Cea Fong responded in the boat, while incident command and support staff remained on shore. Rye FD was able to reach the boat in distress, quickly remove the two individuals from the boat and return to shore. Upon arrival, the two individuals were transferred to EMS and Rye PD for evaluation.

Sea Tow of Mamaroneck was also on scene and waited until the tides cooperated in order to recover the boat from the rocks. Because Rye FD’s inflatable boats are smaller than the Sea Tow vessel, they were used to rescue the individuals.

While Rye FD personnel were committed to the scene of the boat rescue, mutual aid was requested to ensure jurisdictional coverage. Additional fire department staff were called to assist in the rescue efforts and cover the city. All units returned to service at 8:57 pm.
