Rye FD’s Billington Made Lieutenant
Rye FD Firefighter Max Billington was promoted to Lieutenant on Monday. A Rye native, Billington has served as a firefighter since August 2013. He is a third generation Rye firefighter – his father was a volunteer fire chief and his grandfather was a career firefighter. His family runs Billington Marine Service in Port Chester.
Billington will be the fifth Lieutenant in the fire department, a position created in part to reduce overtime costs to the City, according to Captain John McDwyer. The department has four distinct groups, each with its own Lieutenant. Billington will act as a floating Lieutenant, covering each group when its Lieutenant is on vacation, eliminating the need for overtime (as Billington will be on straight time).
“He’ll cover vacation relief which will significantly have an impact on the overtime budget reduction,” said McDwyer. “He will also have the responsibilities of code enforcement.”
