Rye Boys Varsity Soccer brought fire to the Haldane Blue Devils of Cold Spring at their season opener on Labor Day. The Garnets polished their blue horned rivals to take the away match 2 – 1.

“Kieran Traynor and Tommy Broderick each scored within the first 10 minutes to give us an early lead,” said Rye Boys Varsity Soccer Coach Jared Small. “Kieran opened the scoring in the 3rd minute off a Tyler Triolo throw in that was initially flicked on by Tommy. In the 9th minute, Ollie Lincoln served a cultured free kick into the box and Kieran flicked it to Tommy at the far post.”

After the early goals, the match settled into a more even affair and Haldane’s Clement Grossman scored for the Blue Devils in the 20th minute. Rye goalkeeper Max Crothall made a point blank save late in the first half to preserve the lead and a brilliant save on a deflected shot in the 65th minute to prevent any additional goals. Rye center midfielder Tyler Triolo played the full 80, putting out many fires in the center of the park. Shun Nagata also put in a strong shift, displaying a combination of strong 1 v 1 defending and clean decision making on the ball.

Strong defensive efforts from outside midfielders Chase Pepper and Alex Rojas proved crucial to stifling a Haldane attack that was building some momentum in the 60th minute, and Lex Cox and Niklas Hoffman proved to be a solid center back pairing, particularly in the scoreless second half.

The Gemstones travel again Thursday when they will face Lakeland at 6pm. Watch it.
