Garnet Cross Country Shows Polish at Somers Big Red Invite
Garnet Cross Country showed some polish during its first race of the season at the Somers Big Red Invite on Saturday. Fifty other schools attended the race and the Garnet placed 8th and 5th respectively.
“Somers was a good launching point for our season this year,” said Rye Boys Varsity Cross Country Coach Michael Szarkowicz. “We have some significant senior leadership who took advantage of the moment and raced some really nice times.”
The Girls XC team was led by Jess Bourne in 14th place overall in a time of 22:35. Bourne was quickly followed by Sophomore Lily Oberbannscheidt and Senior Aine Kennelly in 18th and 19th respectively. On the boys side, Senior Will Squarek led the charge with solid showing in 30th place. Freshman Camille Cherpion and Senior Will Puzzuoli rounded out the top three for the Garnets.
Rye had a cumulative score of 133 versus 32 for the best performing team. The Gemstones travel to Edgemont on Tuesday for a 4:30pm match.
