Rye Boys Varsity Soccer took flight over the Red Hawks of Nyack on Wednesday, and will head to the Section 1 Championships after a 4 – 1 victory at Nugent Field.

“We are thrilled to be moving on to the Section 1 Championship match,” said Rye Boys Varsity Soccer Coach Jared Small. “The guys played with commitment and discipline, and we generated a good number of scoring opportunities for a semifinal match. We feel like we can make some improvements in the next two days of training to ensure we put out the best possible product in the finals.”

The Garnets got off to a strong start when in the 3rd minute Tommy Broderick stole a ball near midfield and drove at two defenders before playing a through ball to Charlie Margiloff. Margiloff timed his run well and struck a clean shot that was saved by Nyack’s goalkeeper.

The 22nd minute proved to be a crucial moment in the match. Ollie Lincoln served an inviting corner kick that found the head of Kieran Traynor. Traynor’s back post flick seemed destined for the goal before a Nyack player used his hand to prevent the goal. Tommy Broderick converted the ensuing penalty and the Garnets took a 1-0 lead. Despite some opportunities to extend the margin, Rye entered the half up by one goal.
Less than three minutes into the second half, Rye doubled the lead on a sequence that began with a series of 50/50 ball wins by Shun Nagata and Tyler Triolo in the center of the midfield. Traynor then collected the ball and played it to the right flank to Kaden Zion, who drove at his defender before cutting centrally towards the top of the box. Margiloff ran off the shoulder of his defender and Zion played a precise pass through two Nyack defenders. Margiloff calmly finished past the onrushing goalkeeper for his 10th goal of the season.

In the 58th minute, Ollie Lincoln curled a free kick from just outside the box into the upper right corner for his first career varsity goal. Making his 43rd appearance over the span of a three-year varsity career, the left-footed defender opened his account in a glorious way.

After conceding a goal against the run of play in the 72rd minute, Rye ensured that Nyack would not make an improbable impact. Peter Wilmot dispossessed a Nyack player in the final third and played a quick ball to Broderick, who cut inside on his defender and deposited his second goal of the evening. Broderick’s brace brings his season totals to 15 goals and 11 assists–both lead the team.
