Girls Varsity Soccer Plunders Treasure from the Pirates of Pearl River
Rye Girls Varsity Soccer plundered treasure from the Pirates of Pearl River on Monday with a 1 – 0 win in the land of the privateers to complete the regular season.
“Pearl River is a very fast, physical team who is excellent at winning tackles and sending a long ball for dangerous attacking opportunities,” said Rye Girls Varsity Soccer Coach Rich Savage.
Rye’s defense was stellar denying all scoring opportunities. Claire Nemsick was a solid central defender who consistently broke up multiple scoring opportunities and kept the Pirates off the score board.
At the start of the second half, Rye was more composed on the ball. The midfield play of Lyla Keenan, Bowyn Brown, and Maddy Walsh helped Rye to begin to control the pace of the game. The hustle of the outside midfield play of Mary Sack and Mali White shut down the Pirate’s counterattack style of play.
With only two minutes remaining in the game, Sage Ruttenberg stepped up from the outside back position and played a well placed through ball to Maddy Walsh who beat two defenders and tucked the ball in the back of the net.
The season is 14 – 2. Rye will play again for the first round of the sectional tournament on Saturday morning at 11:00 am. The team is still to be determined.
