Girls Varsity Soccer Wins League Title After Dicing Pelham
Rye Girls Varsity Soccer secured the league title after dicing Pelham on Thursday 3 – 0 at Nugent Stadium.
“Rye battled hard against a very feisty league rival Pelham,” said Rye Girls Varsity Soccer Coach Rich Savage.
Pelham was defending well and working on a counter attack in the first half. Although Rye had four very good looks at finding the back of the net, Pelham’s keeper Kaitlyn Howell was spectacular.
At half time. Rye spoke about settling the ball down and to pass more with each team member. As the second half started, Rye began to the control the pace of the game. It was at the 8th minute of the second half when Lyla Keenan served a perfect corner as central defender Claire Nemsick came streaking through and hit the perfect head ball into the back of the net.
It was just five minutes later, Maddy Walsh won the ball in midfield, beat two defenders and passed the ball up to Isabelle Harvey. Harvey masterfully shielded the ball and dished a pass of to Charlotte Keenan. Keenan would quickly change directions and beat the keeper far post.
With this win, the team is now undefeated in its league (and an overall 11 — 2 record). This is the fourth league title for the senior class who has not lost one league match in all of their high school careers.
Watch the replay. Rye will host Arlington, the number five team for AAA schools in NYS, on Saturday afternoon at 4:45pm (watch it).
