A History Lesson at Jay Cemetery on Veterans Day

Members of the Jay Cemetery Association and the Jay Heritage Center gathered on Veterans Day afternoon to honor patriot and peacemaker John Jay at the private cemetery he established in Rye in 1807 for himself and his descendants. The cemetery is located inside the Marshlands Conservancy park.

The cemetery is only opened on special occasions at which time the public is invited to pay their respects to the veterans interred there. Jay Cemetery Association President Peter Doane recounted the history of the cemetery from 1800 to present day. Expanded to just under three acres in 1946, descendants of John Jay are still able to be buried at the site.
