Obituary - Joseph Patrick Banahan, JrJoseph Patrick Banahan, known affectionately as Joe, passed away peacefully of natural causes on November 14, 2023, in New Rochelle, NY. Born on November 19, 1944, in Port Chester, NY, Joe was a man of great character, known for his loving nature, friendly demeanor, and generous spirit.

Joe was a devoted family man, survived by his loving wife, Janet Banahan. He was a proud father to his children, Eric Bonnell (and his wife, Lee Ann), Joseph Banahan, Jr. (and his wife, Sayoko), Carol Banahan, and Thomas Banahan (and his significant other, Nathalie Trevitazzo). He also cherished his role as a grandfather to Ian Bonnell, Morgan Banahan, Jack Banahan, and Teagan Banahan. His familial love extended beyond his immediate family, touching the lives of many who knew him.

An alumnus of Manhattan College, Joe earned his B.S. degree before furthering his studies at Iona College, where he achieved an M.S. in Criminal Justice. His education laid the foundation for a distinguished career in law enforcement and public service.

Joe served the Rye Police Department with distinction and honor for two decades from 1968 to 1988. His roles in the department were varied and significant, which included serving as a patrolman, detective, and sergeant. His commitment to the safety and well-being of the Rye community was unwavering during his service.

In addition to his police work, Joe was also a dedicated member of the Rye Fire Department, where he served as a volunteer and retired as a captain. Upon his retirement from the Rye Police Department, he worked as an Insurance Fire Investigator from 1988 to 2017. His dedication to his community was evident in his professional life, but also in his personal interests.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, Joe was an Assistant Scoutmaster for the Boy Scouts, contributing to the growth and development of countless young men. He practiced martial arts, particularly Karate. As a Law Enforcement Officer (LEO) Firearms Instructor, he shared his expertise with fellow officers, ensuring their proficiency and safety.

Joe’s interests were a testament to his dedication to helping others and his commitment to personal growth and discipline. He was always ready to lend a hand, share a joke, and offer encouragement. He was a friend to many and will be remembered both for his warmth and kindness as well as his occasional sledgehammer wit.

In their time of loss, Joe’s family takes comfort in the knowledge that his life was filled with purpose, service, and love. His legacy will continue to live on in the hearts of the many people he touched throughout his life. While he will be deeply missed, his spirit will continue to inspire those who knew him.

The family will receive friends at the Graham Funeral Home on Sunday November 26, 2023 from 3:00 – 6:00 PM. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Monday November 27, 2023 at 10:00 AM at the Church of the Resurrection in Rye, NY. The Mass will be live-streamed for those who are unable to attend in person (check here). In lieu of flowers, a memorial donation may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.
