In Memory: Augustus John “Jack” Steinthal, Jr., Age 87
Augustus John Steinthal, Jr., known affectionately to friends and family as Jack, passed away peacefully on December 21, 2023, at the age of 87. Born on December 15, 1936, in New York, New York, Jack lived a full and blessed life, marked by his dedication to his family, his church, his community, his career, and his many interests. He departed this life in Rye Brook, New York, leaving behind a wonderful legacy and a community enriched by his contributions.
Jack is survived by Jane Gillespie Steinthal, his beloved wife of 62 years; his sisters Sandra Powell (Robert) and Marge Neprud; his daughter, Mary Jane Kent (Robert), and his sons, John, James (Sally), Thomas (Nicole), and David (Jennifer); his sixteen grandchildren, Kristin Spanos (Mike), Kevin Steinthal, Courtney Stephenson (Brian), Will Steinthal, Isabel Steinthal, TJ Steinthal, CoCo Steinthal, David Kent, Nicholas Steinthal, Hannah Steinthal, Michael Steinthal, Daisy Steinthal, Henry Steinthal, Wyatt Steinthal, Peyton Steinthal, and Joely Steinthal; and his two great grandsons, Cooper Stephenson and Ethan Augustus Spanos. His role as a father and grandfather was one he held in the highest regard, instilling in his family the values of faith, education, integrity, hard work, and compassion.
An alumnus of Columbia University, Jack earned his MBA and went on to lead a successful career. He was at the helm of Jones Instrument Company, a manufacturing business in Stamford, CT, which he ran with a steady hand. His leadership extended beyond his business. He served as the President of the Westchester Country Club, where he was a respected figure known for his even temperament and judgement. A long-time resident of Rye Brook, New York, he was elected to serve on the Rye Brook Board of Education. He was a lifelong parishioner at Resurrection Church and a member the Knights of Malta.
Jack was an avid reader and golfer. He was a strong bridge player and also wore the crown multiple times at the family Hearts Tournaments. All of his grandchildren can attest to the active role he played in their lives, as coach, friend, and role model. He passed on his love of games, but also of fair play and honesty.
Those who knew Jack will remember him for his integrity, his generous spirit, and his unwavering reliability. He was a man who listened more than he spoke, and when he did speak, his words carried the weight of wisdom and sincerity. Jack was loyal to his family and friends, and his presence was a comfort to those around him.
As we say goodbye to Jack, we celebrate a life well-lived and a man well-loved. He was a beacon of light in the lives of his family, a dependable and steadfast friend, and an honorable member of his community. Jack’s memory will be treasured.
In his passing, Jack leaves behind a world that was undeniably better for his presence. Though he will be deeply missed, his legacy of love, leadership, and generosity will continue to live on. The memories shared with him will remain a source of joy and inspiration to all who had the privilege of knowing Augustus John Steinthal, Jr.—a man of honor, a pillar of his community, and a cherished soul.
