One of our interns in the Summer of 2023 was Will McCullough, currently a junior at Emerson College. He completed this Q&A interview with us at the conclusion of his internship. You can read interviews with various MyRye.com interns.
Your Name: Will McCullough
Your Title: MyRye.com intern
Describe yourself in one word: photographer
What appealed to you about local journalism and the MyRye.com internship?
McCullough: The internship appealed to me because of its local relevance. I knew it wouldn’t be hard to go around town getting pictures and stories of local stuff. I also originally intended for my rye when I was a high school senior, so I knew how it typically went.
Describe a typical day during your internship.
McCullough: Usually after the morning stand up meeting I would drive to a given location to take photos of a place or facility. Usually places that are either of interest or are currently in the public eye and a story will be written soon. Sometimes I would write a couple paragraphs about certain places that would then be edited and posted by other interns. Then later I would log the pictures in the google drive.
Tell us about one or two of your assignments.
McCullough: I went around the local YMCA and took pictures of the facilities. I was toured around by an employee and took careful pictures making sure no people’s privacy was invaded. This gave me a better knowledge of how the YMCA functions based on its different facilities, which is a common occurrence whenever I toured a place to take pictures, you learn a lot.
What happens at the 10am stand-up meeting?
McCullough: We would all discuss what’s going on in that workday and plan and distribute the workload.
Where are you currently in college?
McCullough: Emerson College, rising junior.
Are you studying writing, English or journalism as part of your academic and extracurricular activities?
McCullough: I don’t study journalism but I study film so the photography aspect of this internship is what most appealed to me. Also the people skills.
Thanks, Will!
