Attention Pollinators: 1,000 Native Plants for Playland Parkway Project
After removing invasive plants along a section of the Playland Parkway, the Rye Sustainability Committee is inviting residents to help the group install a native plant pollinator “paradise”. An anonymous donator has provided 1,000 plugs of native perennials.
The planting party starts alongside Playland Parkway this Saturday, March 16th from 9:00am – 12:00pm noon. Residents should wear boots and gloves and bring garden shovels or spades (if they have them). Community service hours are available to students. The group will meet across from the Boston Post Road entrance to Parkway. Volunteers can park along the entrance ramp. Any questions can be directed to Rye Sustainability Committee member and landscape architect Chris Cohan who is overseeing the project.
The 1,000 plugs are a mix of these deer resistant native perennials:
- Phlox divaricata (woodland phlox)
- Eutrochium fistulosum (joe pye weed)
- Senecio aureus (golden ragwort)
- Solidago speciosa (showy goldenrod)
- Iris versicolor (blue flag iris)
A smaller donation, this publisher was pleased to contribute 11 native tree saplings:
- Quercus rubra (red oak) – 7
- Quercus palustris (pin oak) – 2
- Prunus serotina (black cherry) – 1
