The Rye Girls Varsity Lacrosse team could not have expected Regionals would be 14 goals easier than Sectionals, but that’s exactly what happened.

After the Garnets (17-3) narrowly defeated Nyack 10-9 in the Class C Section championship last Thursday the 23rd, the team easily handled Cornwall, Section 9’s representative at Regionals, with a 15-0 win on Tuesday at Lakeland High School. Rye led 8-0 after the first quarter and 12-0 at halftime, after which they rested many starters and still preserved the dominant result. Both Karenna Chader and Katherine Ebeling produced a clean slate for Rye in the combined shutout victory. An anonymous fan compared the trouncing to watching “midgets vs mites”, a reference to ice hockey, where mites are players in the 8U division, whereas midgets are 18U.

Offensively, Della Goodman and Carolyne Doyle both recorded hat tricks. Mary Sack also picked up a multi-goal performance, while Mary Ebeling notched one goal and two assists. Other goal scorers include Lily and Beau Whaling, Paige Tepedino, Mia Howson, Alex Wood, and Annie Toulouse.

Rye’s next challenge is Saturday, June 1, at 11:00am. This is a New York State Regional Final matchup between the Garnets and either Queensbury or Glen Falls, whichever team claims the Section 2 championship. The game is set for Queensbury High School, giving the Spartans home field advantage should they win their game against Glen Falls. Saturday’s game is destined to be closer, but with a victory over Nyack under their belts, this Garnets team may very well be the ‘team to beat’ in the entire state.
