Girls Varsity Lacrosse One Win Away from State Title
Rye Girls Varsity lacrosse is one win away from championing the 2024 NYSPHSAA Girls Lacrosse State Championship (Class C) after defeating Fulton high school 14-10 on Friday morning. The only obstacle between a State Title and the Garnets are the Sayville Golden Flashes, a very tough opponent out of Long Island.
Rye must have eaten a better breakfast than Fulton this morning, as the team powered to a 4-0 lead after just 3:38 of game time had elapsed. The Garnets were certainly ready to go out of the gates this morning, which was a key reason why they reigned victorious in the end.
To their credit, the Red Dragons managed to tie the game up at 6-6 just before halftime. A crucial timeout from head coach Michelle Mason helped kill the momentum and allowed Rye to enter halftime with an 8-6 lead. The Garnets never looked back, stretching the lead to 11-6 quickly in the third quarter and nurturing that lead all the way through the final buzzer.
Sisters Lily and Beau Whaling shined for Rye, and the former potted five goals, while her younger sister added a hat trick herself. Both sisters assisted once on each others’ goals as well.
Della Goodman also notched four goals plus an assist in an electrifying performance, while Duke commit Caroline Doyle netted two first quarter goals. These four girls were the only ones to score in the game, although Mary Ebeling did add two assists as a crafty playmaker for the Garnets.
Rye does not have much time to rest: they play for the State Championship at 9:00am tomorrow, Saturday, June 8 at SUNY Cortlandt. The Golden Flashes are currently ranked 2nd overall in the state and 40th in the nation (Rye is 1st and 25th, respectively). This shakes up to be an incredible game tomorrow morning.
