Rye Girls Varsity Skiing MVP: Charlotte Derman
MyRye.com is featuring varsity team MVPs from the spring 2024 sports season (and this one from the winter). The MVPs have been selected by each coach. A big MyRye.com congratulations to all the MVPs.
Rye Girls Varsity Skiing Co-Head Coach David Gray has announced his MVP for the 2023-24 season: senior Charlotte Derman.
“Charlotte has been a major part of the Rye Varsity Ski Team’s success over the past three years,” Gray told MyRye.com. “Besides being Co-Captain the past couple of seasons, she has been the most consistent racer on the Girl’s team.”
The skiing team participates in the winter sports season, but only officially completed the year with a team dinner in May. There, Derman was honored for her excellent career as a Garnet, which featured three consecutive years representing Rye at Sectionals. She was known for her “athletic ability and pure determination” according to Gray, which made up for her lack of experience relative to other Section 1 skiers.
“It’s a combination of those traits, accomplishments, and her selfless attitude of putting the team first that [makes] Charlotte the MVP of the Girl’s Varsity Ski Team for the 2023-2024 season,” said Gray. He also noted the positive impact Derman had on younger, even less experienced skiers on the team as a mentor and leader, an attitude Gray simply calls “unselfish.”
