Obituary - Deborah Lee Monroe

Deborah Lee Monroe, known affectionately as Debby to her friends and family, passed away after a brief illness on August 11, 2024, in White Plains, New York. Born on February 12, 1949, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Debby’s warmth and intelligence shone brightly throughout her 75 years.

Debby’s early years in Milwaukee laid the foundation for a life marked by academic achievement and a passion for learning. She pursued her love for languages at Middlebury College, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts in Spanish. Her quest for knowledge continued at Georgetown University, where she completed her Master of Arts in Accounting.

Professionally, Debby was a respected Senior Accounting Manager at the Financial Accounting Standards Board in Norwalk, Connecticut. Her significant responsibilities included shaping the rules, regulations, and policies that governed financial accounting practices for American corporations and companies. Her work was not just a job; it was a testament to her dedication to excellence and integrity in her field.

Beyond her professional life, Debby’s heart was always with her family. She was a loving mother to her daughter, Jessica Anna Vaughan, and a cherished mother-in-law to William Vaughan. Her role as a grandmother to Robert Douglas and Matthew Peter Vaughan filled her with immense pride and joy. Debby’s sisters, Robin Deats and Judith Grosswald, as well as sister-in-law Margie Laughton, shared in the close-knit family bond that was a cornerstone of her life.

Debby’s interests were as varied as they were heartfelt. Her family was her greatest joy, and she took immense pride in their accomplishments and well-being. Her beloved cat, Bruce, was a constant companion, and his presence brought her immeasurable comfort and happiness.

Her commitment to her community was evident in her active involvement with the Community Synagogue in Rye and her participation in numerous civic organizations. Debby’s altruistic spirit was a beacon of light, inspiring those around her to engage in acts of kindness and community service.

In retirement, Debby rediscovered her love for the game of bridge through the Rye Seniors Program, enjoying weekly games and numerous other activities that were as much about friendship as they were about the play. Her social circle in Rye and beyond  was a source of laughter, support, and cherished memories. Debby’s presence was a gift to all who knew her, and her absence will be deeply felt by her many friends.

Debby was a woman of many virtues—loving, intelligent, and selfless. These words only begin to capture the essence of a life lived with purpose and grace. Her legacy is one of love, commitment to her family, and service to her community.
