Burke’s early career was marked by his service in the U.S. Navy, followed by a start in the business world with Time Inc. His keen business acumen and understanding of the media landscape quickly propelled him into leadership roles. In 1972, he joined Capital Cities Communications, where he demonstrated his talent for managing media properties and guiding the company through significant growth and expansion.

In 1985, Capital Cities Communications acquired ABC in a landmark $3.5 billion deal, one of the largest media mergers of the time. That deal was engineered by Thomas S. Murphy, another Rye resident, and Burke was his trusted lieutenant.

Following the acquisition, Burke was named President of ABC, where he oversaw the network’s operations and played a crucial role in revitalizing its programming and profitability. Under his leadership, ABC enjoyed a resurgence in popularity, with hits like “Roseanne,” “The Wonder Years,” and “Monday Night Football” becoming cultural staples.

Burke’s impact on the television industry was profound, and his legacy includes not only the successful merger but also the strengthening of ABC as a leading American television network. He retired from his role as President of ABC in 1994, leaving behind a thriving company that had regained its competitive edge in the industry.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, Daniel Burke had a deep personal connection to Rye, New York, where he was a long-time resident. Burke and his family were actively involved in the local community, and he was known for his philanthropic efforts, particularly in education and the arts. Daniel Burke passed away on October 26, 2011 at his home in Rye.
