Fresh off a season-long four-game road trip in which the Rye Boys Varsity Soccer Team went 3-1, the Garnets returned home and scored two second half goals to defeat Irvington High School 2-0. The team continued to find their offensive game in the second half, which has been a trend for them throughout the entire month of September.

“It was great to see two freshmen step up for us when Rei Nagata served a beautiful ball into the box from the right side, [and] Harrison Zimmer elevated above his defenders for a perfect header,” Head Coach Jared Small told MyRye.com in his postgame summary. “We played a very controlled first half, and it was great to see us come out strong in the 2nd half and look to win it early.”

The Garnets did not stop at looking to win it early in half #2, as they put it into action with two quick strikes right after the break. Zimmer’s header was immediately followed by a Kaden Zion penalty kick to turn a 0-0 tie into a 2-0 lead less than four minutes apart. Zion drew the foul inside the box with dogged determination on the ball before picking the bottom right corner on his shot for yet another goal.

“Zac Ramsey and Cole Furber were each strong in their central defending roles,” Small said of his back line, which helped pitch a shutout. “Lex Cox, Rei Nagata, Silas Kavanagh, and Nico Etinger all did excellent work from the outside back positions to help fortify the defense.”

In goal, Rye turned to Aydan Breen for the entire match. Breen recorded three saves in the victory for the clean sheet.

The Garnets (7-1) are right back to it on Wednesday, September 25, as they play host to the Byram Hills Bobcats. Action at Nugent Stadium is set to get underway at 5:00pm and will be streamed on LocalLive (watch it here). Revisit their recent win over Irvington here.
