Rye Boys Soccer and Byram Hills dueled at Nugent Stadium on Wednesday evening, and it was the visiting Bobcats who came out on top by a 1-0 score. Rye missed several opportunities to score throughout the game and allowed the lone goal scored on a first half counterattack.

“We played well for long stretches of the game,” Head Coach Jared Small told MyRye.com after the game. “We’ll learn a lot from the goal we gave up. There were 5 distinct things we could have done to avoid conceding that goal, so I think this can be a great learning experience for the guys.”

In the 35th minute, a failed set piece from Rye turned into a goal for Byram Hills on the other end. That would hold up as the only tally throughout the game after an exciting but scoreless second half.

“I like that we toughened up on our defending of set pieces,” Small said. “I think we took some nice steps forward as a team despite the 1-0 outcome.”

Rye’s best chance came early, as freshman Harrison Zimmer – a goal scorer last game – served a good-looking ball into the box, which rattled around before the Bobcats eventually cleared. Rye had other chances later on, but were unable to put one past a stingy back line and goalkeeper.

The Garnets (7-2) will seek to get back in the win column on Saturday, September 28, in a road tilt against Pelham. Although it’s not college football on Fox, kickoff is scheduled for noon at Glover Field. Watch it here. Watch the loss to Byram Hills here.
