The Rye Cross Country Team took their talents to Bear Mountain this past Saturday morning, as both the girls and boys teams took part in the Suffern Invitational at Bear Mountain’s three mile course. Head Coach Bryan Johnson spoke to MyRye.com after the races, saying “this was an extremely competitive field, with some of the state’s top runners coming to Bear Mountain to run.”

“We are definitely happy to see the progress that both sides are making,” Johnson continued. “Several athletes [hit] PRs (personal records) compared to where they were on this course last year.”

Girls

Lily Oberbannscheidt paced the girls side with a 17th-place finish and an overall time of 20:19.9, followed closely by Emma Giannetti (29th, 21:31.5). “Lily and Emma G have really solidified themselves as our Top 2,” Johnson said. “It’s great seeing Maddie and Sophia make those strides to enter the top 5 conversation.”

Madeleine Shingler and Sophia Ambrosini came in third and fifth on the Garnets respectively, sandwiched around typical strong performer Emma Pedone. All but Ambrosini broke the 23-minute mark on Saturday.

A banged-up boys side held their own over the weekend, with Clayton Stark and Ben Truman leading the way. Stark finished 43rd overall among male runners with a time of 18:07.1, with Truman not too far behind at 19:16.9 (79th). Thomas Oldfield, Nick Field, Alex Marino, and Greydon Cast were the other finishers for Rye.

“We were missing a few runners on the boys side,” Johnson said. “But we are excited to see everyone back at it on Wednesday for our Rye Town Meet.”

It’s a rare midweek meet coming up for the Garnets, who are one of five schools participating in the small meet on September 25. It will be Rye, Blind Brook, Rye Neck, Port Chester, and Keio Academy racing on Wednesday. The invitational is set to begin at 4:45pm.
