Boys Soccer Downs Eastchester in Open Game for Tenth Win
Just minutes after the Rye Girls Varsity Tennis Team clinched their school-leading 10th win of 2024, the Rye Boys Soccer Team responded with a shutout victory of their own for victory #10. An early goal and a second half insurance marker was all it took for the Garnets to defeat the Eastchester Eagles 2-0 – a low score given the high number of chances for both sides throughout the game.
“This was an interesting match from start to finish,” Head Coach Jared Small said after the game. “I like how we grew into the game.”
Liam Harrington netted a beautiful goal in just the third minute, assisted by Kaden Zion. “It was great to see Liam open his account with a confident strike to put us up 1-0 early,” Small said. “And it was also great to see Fin do the same to double our lead midway through the second half.”
After Harrington blasted a snipe from around 30 yards out, Fin Kearney buried a closer-range shot, also set up by Zion, to double the lead. That occurred in the 60th minute and put the game out of reach for Eastchester.
“The opponent presented us with some challenges and did a good job attacking in the first half, and I think Jack Gilroy and Kaden Zion both proved why they are first rate players and captains,” Small continued. “Each stepped up when we needed on-field leadership and work rate and helped lead the entire group to raise our performance.”
Small praised his midfielders of Alex van der Voort, Peter Wilmot, Shun Nagata, Karol Mendoza, and Kasen Scarperi for their role in the win for how they controlled the center of the pitch. Other than a ten minute stretch in the second half, the game was largely in Rye’s favor – although it was admittedly more open than usual, leading to chances on both sides.
The Garnets (10-2) are back in action on Wednesday, October 9, at 4:45pm. The game is at Byram Hills as Rye will look for their eleventh win. Watch it here. Watch the win vs. Eastchester here.
