Calhoun’s Golden Goal Pushes Girls Soccer to Section Finals
For the second consecutive year, the Rye Girls Soccer Team is heading to the Section 1 Class A finals, thanks to Parker Calhoun. Calhoun’s Golden Goal in extra time propelled #2 Rye to a 2-1 victory over #3 Pearl River on Wednesday evening in exhilarating fashion.
Hannah Jachman continued her torrent stretch with another playoff goal, as she opened the scoring in the sixth minute off a beautiful assist from Charlotte Keenan. It stood as the only goal for over an hour, when the Pirates tied the game up on one of the longest goals in the history of high school soccer – a 50 yard bomb with 5:40 to play.
Rye refused to let the unbelievable goal rattle them however, dominating extra time before Calhoun sealed the deal. It’s her first playoff goal of the season, and fifth overall in 2024. Keenan picked up a second assist on the tally, which was set up by a long Clare Nemsick free kick.
#2 Rye (17-1-1) will face off against #4 Somers in the sectional finals – the game is scheduled for 12:30pm on Saturday, November 2, at Arlington High School (neutral site). The Garnets previously defeated the Tuskers 2-0 in their first league game of the year. Somers has won their three playoff games up to this point by a combined score of 11-1, including a 2-1 decision over #1 Pleasantville on Wednesday. They are not a fluky underdog – they will certainly give the favored Garnets a serious challenge.
