A local real estate team has worked to light up downtown Purchase Street. Through their efforts, half of the 26 street trees on downtown Purchase Street between the OKO restaurant at the corner of Locust Avenue and Chase bank on the corner of West Purdy Avenue will be lit up with white holiday lights for the winter months.

“Everybody is stepping up,” said June Hatch, part of the April May June team at the local Compass real estate office, along with her sisters April Saxe and May Burke. The group spearheaded the tree lighting effort. “It really just shows a testament to the community… it’s just been a collaborative effort, and everybody’s getting involved, which is so nice.”

Hatch said she and her sisters approached the Chamber of Commerce, who quickly pulled in City Manager Greg Usry and DPW head Ryan Coyne. The Chamber just completed its own plan this season, upgrading the 20 year old holiday lights that wrap and hang from the street lights along Purchase Street.

Inspired by the winter lights in other downtowns in the area, particularly Greenwich, Hatch and her sisters found MC Holiday Lighting, the firm that installs the lights in Greenwich. The firm started its installation earlier this week and was expecting to finish Thursday evening or Friday. The lights are expected to stay up through the winter until some time in early February.

The Rye Chamber of Commerce and the April May June team are the title sponsors, but financial support has come from nearly 200 individuals and local businesses.

“We’re hoping to bring joy to the downtown,” said Hatch. “The community has really embraced it.”
