The Rye Varsity Hockey Team fell in their home opener on Wednesday night, never leading in a 4-3 loss to Rivertown. Rye battled back from 1-0, 2-1, and 3-2 deficits, but allowed a third period goal and could not forge a fourth comeback.

“We battled throughout the game,” Head Coach Pete Thomas told MyRye.com after the game. “We have some growing pains to go through because of how young we are but better to experience them now than later. In a positive note, our power play continues to produce.”

Rye scored two on the man advantage – their second straight game doing so. Trevor Dolan got his first of the season from Tyler McDermott and Max Niejadlik. Jamie Morris struck for his second off an assist from Dean Kim for Rye’s other PPG.

Late in the second period, Jamie Showers scored a tying goal, assisted by Nick Doyle. In goal, Davis Goodman and Owen Fitzgibbons split the game, with Goodman saving 7/9 and Fitzgibbons 14/16 shots.

The Garnets (0-2) will look for their first win of the season against Massena on Saturday, December 14. Puck drop is scheduled for 12:15pm at Playland for Rye’s first matinee matchup of the year. Replay the loss to Rivertown here (note: a Livebarn account is required to view).
