Season Outlook is a new series for the 2024-25 academic year, where MyRye.com asks every varsity coach about the season ahead. Today, we learn about the Rye Girls Varsity Basketball Team and 6th-year Head Coach Margo Hackett.

Eight returners provide great optimism for Rye Girls Varsity Basketball this season. Last year, an inexperienced team struggled to the tune of a 9-12 record, but a strong start coupled with a familiar, more seasoned roster excites Head Coach Margo Hackett.

“We have a very talented group of returners who will make an impact immediately,” Hackett told MyRye.com. “Our athleticism and depth will help us win games this season. This is a great group of girls both on and off the court.”

Phoebe Greto, Molly Kennedy, Paige Tepedino, Stella Maresca, Kathleen Denvir, Frankie Chiaravalle, Natalie Guazzo, and Annie Toulouse all made an impact last season for the Garnets, and are set to assume even larger roles this year. The team also picked up two critical depth pieces from last year’s JV team. “We are lucky to have Ella Poole and Liz Schwartzman join the roster this season,” Hackett said in her preseason report.

The team is already off to a 4-0 start, showing serious signs of improvement with victories over John Jay-Cross River, Nyack, Henry Hudson, and Lakeland. Hackett and the rest of the Garnets are happy to have those wins under their belt as they look forward to league play, which includes two matchups against both Harrison and Pelham.

“I think it is safe to say Harrison is always a game we look forward to – and being that they are back in our league, we are looking forward to those two games. We also enjoy playing Pelham who is also a league rival,” the head coach confirmed with MyRye.com.

Rye visits Pelham on January 22, 2025, then hosts Harrison on the 27th for the first round of league play. They will later rematch these tough opponents in February (vs Pelham on 2/7, @ Harrison on 2/13).

“We have had a great start to the season with a 4-0 record and we are hoping to build off these wins and grow every day,” Hackett concluded.

The Garnets (4-0) next play on Thursday, December 19, as they host the Barack Obama School for Social Justice. League play opens up on January 14, 2025, at Byram Hills.
