Season Outlook: The 24-25 Rye – Rye Neck – Blind Brook Varsity Swimming and Diving Team
Season Outlook is a new series for the 2024-25 academic year, where MyRye.com asks every varsity coach about the season ahead. Today, we learn about the Rye – Rye Neck – Blind Brook Boys Varsity Swimming and Diving Team and Head Coach Katie Konopka.
The Rye – Rye Neck – Blind Brook team went 7-0 in 2023-24 in league three, and new challenges await for the group this season. They graduated five seniors in the class of 2024, and have moved up into a much more competitive league two.
“This season will be a rebuilding year for the swim team,” Konopka told MyRye.com. “The team has some very talented returning swimmers who will make a great impact on the team this season including George Papaioannou, Wilson Redd, and Filip Glitterstam. We also have six new swimmers join the team this season which will help the overall depth of the team.”
One game Konopka and the team is looking forward to is a rematch against Yorktown. Last year, Rye – Rye Neck – Blind Brook came away with a close victory in the dual meet season, and ended up sharing the league three co-championship with the Huskers. “We are excited for another opportunity to compete against them,” Konopka said of the matchup.
With the great deal of roster turnover, the team is still voting on captains. The six newcomers on the roster represent a positive trend for Konopka: the growth of the program. “We have a lot of new swimmers on the team this season and are excited for the growth of the Rye – Rye Neck – Blind Brook Swim and Dive program over the next couple years,” she told MyRye.com.
The team is one game into their season, with a 97-76 loss to Harrison on Friday, December 6. Catch them next on Monday, December 9, as they travel to face Yorktown – Somers in their first road meet of the season.
