Season Outlook is a new series for the 2024-25 academic year, where MyRye.com asks every varsity coach about the upcoming season. Today, we learn about the Rye Varsity Skiing Teams (boys and girls) with Co-Head Coach David Gray.

The Rye Varsity Skiing Team sent eight combined athletes to Section 1 States in 2024 in a very successful season for the team, up two from the six they sent in 2023. Gray expressed hope that his teams could replicate the 2024 success in 2025, while noting the difficulty of achieving that number again. “We’re hoping to have as many as last year, but it will be a challenge given that we lost a number of our top racers on both the boy’s and girl’s teams,” Gray told MyRye.com.

Both MVPs from last year (Charlotte Derman, pictured above, and Justin Gray) were seniors and have graduated from Rye High School. “We are a very young team that lost some of its best racers to graduation,” Gray told MyRye.com. “We will be developing a number of skiers this year.”

Because of the amount of roster turnover, the leadership group will look significantly different for this upcoming season than it did last year. On the girls side, Kira Woolsey and Audray Meier are set to be team captains, with Jack Sheridan and Harrison Gelinas on the boys side.

The team kicks off play on January 13, 2025, according to Gray. Every race will be a step closer to states for a team with high aspirations for the season.
