32 Medals, 18 PRs for Rye Indoor Track in First Meet of 2025
It was a long list of accomplishments for the Rye Varsity Indoor Track and Field Team on Tuesday evening, as fourteen athletes recorded new personal bests (with several doing so in multiple events), eleven medalled individually, and twenty others earned a top-three placement as part of a four-person relay team. Overall, it was a major success for the Garnets in their first competition of 2025.
“One of our thoughts with this meet was to knock some rust off from break,” Head Coach Bryan Johnson told MyRye.com after the meet. “With a two-week vacation this year, we wanted to bring the kids up to Rockland Community College and have the chance to work on the field events, as well as to race them against real competition ahead of this weekend’s league championship.”
One of Johnson’s goals was to push some of his athletes beyond their previous training levels. He even tried some in new events to see how they handled different distances and paces.
“One of the good things about this meet was, with it falling right after winter break, we were able to practice some things on Monday, see them live in a meet Tuesday, and now we have three good days of practice ahead of us before the weekend,” Co-Head Coach Kevin Murphy told MyRye.com. He and Johnson had to be pleased with their team’s performance, as the Garnets set a new season high for personal records (PRs) and medals for a single meet.
As Johnson noted, the Garnets have a big test ahead at the end of this week. Their next meet is scheduled for Sunday, January 12, at 6:00pm. The event features all the other schools in Rye’s league: Eastchester, Edgemont, Mamaroneck, Mount Vernon, New Rochelle, Pelham, Scarsdale, Ursuline, and Yonkers. The league championship is on the line at Armory Track in New York City over the weekend.
