Duck Hunters Trigger Complaints from Rye Residents
Duck hunters active in City of Rye waters have been triggering complaints from residents over the past few days.
Rye PD said it has been receiving complaints about duck hunting in the area of Tide Mill and Port Chester Harbor. Hunting of migratory birds is permitted by New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) as long as hunters are abiding by the rules and regulations. In response to resident concerns, the Rye PD Marine Unit has been increasing patrols “to confirm compliance with the rules and ensure the safety of the general public”.
On Thursday, January 2, 2025 at approximately 11:00 am the Rye Police Marine Unit made contact with a group of hunters on the shore by Tide Mill and conducted a safety and compliance check. One summons was issued relating to the registration requirements of a vessel.
Migratory bird season for ducks continues until January 27th, 2025. The City of Rye Police Department will be conducting checks of hunters throughout the season. If you have any complaints, questions or concerns, please contact the City of Rye Police Department Marine Unit at (914) 967-1234 or on Marine VHF Channel 16.
See the full list of Department of Environmental Conservation’s rules and regulations and the New York State DEC site detailing the roles and responsibilities of both hunters and landowners.
