Inside MyRye.com with Intern Alex Lee

MyRye.com welcomes college and high school interns from the City of Rye throughout the year. One of our interns in the Summer of 2024 was Alex Lee, currently a freshman at Loyola Marymount University. He completed this Q&A interview with us at the conclusion of his internship.

Your Name: Alex Lee
Your Title: MyRye.com photographer
Describe yourself in one word: Efficient
What appealed to you about local journalism and the MyRye.com internship?
Lee: I was interested in how local news organizations operate. I wondered how stories are written and how the writers and media staff work together.
Describe a typical day during your internship.
Lee: I got on the morning meetings at 10 am to check in on the status of my assignments. After reviewing my photos from the day before, I would get a new one to go take pictures of. After shooting, I would upload the pictures to Lightroom, export them, and then rename them in my Google Drive.
Tell us about one or two of your assignments.
Lee: I met people from city hall and networked there to find people in the media industry. I am grateful for the new connections and they have definitely opened doors for my future career.

What happens at the 10am stand-up meeting?
Lee: We go over the previous day’s work and receive new assignments.
The MyRye.com interns heard from various guest speakers, all with connections to local media. What were three of the more interesting things you learned?
Lee:
- Anna Brugman taught us about media and local news policy.
- Mark Lungariello taught us about his work in the industry as a reporter and editor in the New York Post.
- Brian Wieser told us about the future proofness from AI as photographers as we are the ones that give the images a touch of life.
Where are you headed to college?
Lee: I am attending Loyola Marymount University as a freshman in the fall and am studying Film Television and Media studies.
Do you plan to study writing, English or journalism as part of your academic and extracurricular activities?
Lee: My major may not be specific to local news, but is definitely in tune with interacting with local media at some point in my career. I may plan on doing a deeper dive into videography in local news media as that is my interest.
Thanks Alex!
