Rye Hockey picked up their first marquee win of the 2024-25 season on Wednesday, January 8, defeating the defending state champion Suffern Mounties 2-1. The Garnets scored twice in 13 seconds in the third period to turn a 1-0 deficit around, and held on for the upset win.

“We battled all night and even when we went down 1-0 in the 2nd period, we stayed the course and played our game plan,” Head Coach Pete Thomas told MyRye.com. “Eventually we tallied 2 goals in 13 seconds in the 3rd, the first by Will Niejadlik from Jamie Morris and Alex Gordon and the game winner from Tyler McDermott from Dean Kim and Drew Dolan.”

Niejadlik buried a loose puck in the crease with 5:47 to play in the third period, before McDermott capitalized on a broken play in the low slot with 5:34 left in regulation. Fernando Mosquera stood tall in goal with several key stops (23 total) to earn another win.

Rye had previously lost 6-2 to Suffern in their season opener on December 6. The Garnets did a better job staying out of the penalty box on Wednesday, not allowing a dangerous Mounties powerplay to generate momentum.

Rye (4-2-1) is lined up to face Mamaroneck in their next contest, another one at home on Friday, January 10. Puck drop is scheduled for 6:00pm at Rye Playland. Watch the replay vs Suffern here (note: a Livebarn account is required to view).
