MyRye.com welcomes college and high school interns from the City of Rye throughout the year. One of our interns in the Summer of 2024 was Tilman Oberbannscheidt, currently a freshman at San Diego State University. He completed this Q&A interview with us at the conclusion of his internship.

You can read interviews with various MyRye.com interns. If you have an interest in interning to work on writing, editing, photography or marketing, please get in touch with us.

Your Name: Tilman Oberbannscheidt

Your Title: MyRye.com photographer

Describe yourself in one word: Leader

What appealed to you about local journalism and the MyRye.com internship?

Oberbannscheidt: When I chose MyRye.com for my internship I was wanting an experience where I could use my photography capabilities and use them for a better purpose. It’s also a chance for me to express myself and help supply photos to MyRye.com.

Describe a typical day during your internship.

Oberbannscheidt: We had an early standup meeting in the morning at 10 am where we would recap each of our previous days and what we worked on. The interns would be then given their assignments for the day/week, and we would go off and do our own business. I went out and shot photos of a specific location, and then I would return home to edit and catalog the photos in Google Drive. I got to choose my hours which was nice and helped me manage my time.

Tell us about one or two of your assignments.

Oberbannscheidt: My favorite assignment I got to do was shooting photos at Playland at night. There was a thunderstorm right before I went and I got a chance to shoot photos of the park when it was empty.

What happens at the 10am stand-up meeting?

Oberbannscheidt: Each intern reflects on the work they have done in the past days and weeks. We also discuss future assignments and time is given to ask any questions if needed.

The MyRye.com interns heard from various guest speakers, all with connections to local media. What were three of the more interesting things you learned?

Oberbannscheidt:

  1. Always stay in touch with people you meet.
  2. Success is your connections.
  3. Keep asking questions because it may lead you in the direction you need to be in.

Where are you currently in college?

Oberbannscheidt: I will be attending San Diego State University in the fall for 1 year and then I will be transferring to Boston University under a guaranteed acceptance program. I am an incoming freshman at SDSU.

Thanks Tilman!
