Man Follows Resident in Apparent Attempt to Steal Vehicle

A man followed a 52 year old male resident to his home on off Midland Avenue near the Louden Woods neighborhood on Saturday and according to police, attempted to steal the homeowner’s vehicle. The incident happened in the middle of the day.
Rye PD arrested Carlos Varela-Pichardo, age 33 of the Bronx, NY, for Attempted Grand Larceny 3rd degree, which is a Class E Felony.
On Saturday, February 1, 2025 around 11:55am, Varela-Pichardo was arrested by Rye PD officers after reportedly following a resident home and demanding his car keys. After the resident declined his request Varela-Pichardo fled the scene only to be apprehended a short distance away. Varela-Pichardo was uncooperative during the traffic stop and resisted when asked to exit the vehicle leading to additional charges of Obstruction of Governmental Administration and Resisting Arrest.
Varela-Pichardo was released on an appearance ticket and ordered to return to Rye City Court on February 18, 2025 at 9:00 am. Rye PD reminds you that booking charges are merely accusations and the defendant(s) are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
