Tuesdays at 10 is a new men’s association in Rye, focused on catering to men ages 55+ in Rye who are retired or transitioning to retirement. Each month the group organizes a speaker program. MyRye.com will introduce you to each speaker, preview what attendees might hear and tell you about their connection to Rye and the group.

Today meet Rye resident Stephen Gallagher, US Chief Economist and Head of Research for Societe Generale in the Americas.

Your Name: Stephen Gallagher

MyRye.com: When are you speaking to the Tuesdays at 10 group?

Gallagher: I will be speaking on Friday, February 21 at 10am at Whitby Castle [see event information]

What’s your day job?

Gallagher: I am the US Chief Economist and Head of Research for Societe Generale in the Americas. We analyze rates,  FX, and Commodities for the benefit of investment decisions.

Give us the gist of your Tuesdays at 10 talk.

Gallagher: The global economic system is changing as tariffs are now becoming tools of global economic policy with rising nationalism etc. This is a large topic, and I will offer some insights on why it is rising and concerns.

Who invited you to speak with the group?

Gallagher: Bob Clyatt asked me to speak. He asks profound economic questions, and I remember having some serious chats as we watched soccer. I quickly learned that many of the fathers I have chatted with over the years are club members. I look forward to reconnecting.

Who is the most interesting speaker you have listened to?

Gallagher: There are so many.  Recently I’ve had the chance to chat with William Dudley, former President of the New York Federal Reserve. He is incredibly insightful and offers straightforward explanations of complicated financial and economic systems.

Tell us about you.

How would your friends and family describe you in one word?

Gallagher: Dedicated.

What is the best professional advice you dispense?

Gallagher: Take time to explore what you want to do. I am our bank’s recruiting captain for Columbia University, and I give this advice often. Candidates are often  pulled into roles because they are currently popular etc., and they haven’t taken time to understand roles. Networking opportunities shouldn’t always be about the next opportunity. Rather, take the time to understand an industry, company and role.

Where do you live in Rye and how many years have you lived in the City?

Gallagher: Grace Church Street

What do you enjoy doing in your free time?

Gallagher: Exercising. I was a competitive swimmer and made several triathlons in the past. I garden – at least dig a lot.  My wife wins awards. Lastly, I travel.

Thanks Stephen!
