The City of Rye Fire Department and the Village of Mamaroneck Fire Department both responded to Rye Neck Middle/High School for a commercial fire alarm on Thursday afternoon.

At 1:21pm Thursday, an initial dispatch was activated from a pull station activation in the first-floor lobby of the middle school. The building was safely evacuated by school staff. Upon arrival, staff notified fire department members that there was an odor of burning. The staff then directed crews to the area where the odor was strongest.

Crews from both fire departments investigated the entire building to locate the source of the odor, which was a rooftop air handler for the HVAC that was overheating. Fire department members and the school custodial staff were successful in isolating the unit by shutting the power off. Units operated on scene for approximately one hour and were back into service at 2:10pm.
