Rye Hockey Rides White-Hot Offense to Sectional Championship

The Rye Hockey Team dominated their Section 1 Division 2 championship game on Sunday, March 2, beating the Pelham Pelicans 6-0 to win the league title. Rye advances to play the winner of Section X as they push their win streak to 11 games.
“All of our guys played a terrific game tonight,” Head Coach Pete Thomas told MyRye.com after the game. “They executed our systems and established our game.”
After a scoreless first, Jamie Morris scored off a nice feed from Will Niejadlik to break the ice, which served as the first crack in the Pelham dam. The next two minutes saw Rye score twice more, with captain Drew and younger brother Trevor Dolan both finding twine, with captains Dean Kim and Tyler McDermott picking up assists on Drew’s goal. The senior scored again short-handed to cap off a four-goal 2nd period.
McDermott added a short-handed empty netter and Cody Greenhaw struck as well to close the scoring in the third. Fernando Mosquera picked up the shutout victory with 25 saves to continue a very strong season in the crease.
The Garnets have now scored 5+ goals in each of their last seven games, averaging 5.86 per game (41 total) during that stretch. This particular offensive outburst led to Thomas and his group lifting the league championship trophy, with more hockey to come.
Rye’s next game is set for Saturday, March 8, at 4:00pm. The Garnets will take on the winner of Section X, either Ogdensburg Free Academy or Malone.
