Season Outlook is a new series for the 2024-25 academic year, where MyRye.com asks every varsity coach about the season ahead. Today, we learn about the Rye Boys Varsity Tennis Team with Head Coach Sue Dickson.

Despite eight seniors from the 2024 Rye Boys Varsity Tennis Team graduating, Sue Dickson and the Garnets still have a quality blend of experience and fresh faces for the 2025 season. The largely new team will be looking to reach or even improve upon the 9-3 record Rye earned last spring.

“Spring of 2025 will be a blend of returning players with new additions to the team,” Dickson told MyRye.com. “The returning players will fill in the gaps nicely and we have some young players who are expected to contribute to the program as well.”

One of the returners is senior Alex Gordon, who will serve as one of the Garnets’ two or three captains. The other(s) will be voted on by the players. Gordon will be a starter for Coach Dickson for the fourth year running this season. “He demonstrates a strong work ethic and is a true competitive spirit in both matches and practice,” Dickson said of her star upperclassman.

The Garnets play against all the best competition Section 1 has to offer in what is annually a difficult but enjoyable slate of matches. “All matches are very spirited and, in the past, could swing either way,” Dickson said of her team’s schedule. “Each year is different depending on the players at each school.” Some of the programs Rye will take on that usually bring extra buzz are Scarsdale, Mamaroneck, Horace Greeley, and John Jay-Cross River, among other league matches.

At the time of our interview with Dickson, she was unsure how the depth chart would shake out. She knows that it will be challenging to replace the eight seniors and one underclassman who are not returning to the team from last year’s group, but is excited to bring in some talented boys from last year’s JV team plus last year’s returners with an extra year of development under their belts.

League play for Rye begins on Tuesday, April 1st, with a home match against Clarkstown South. The season kicks off at 4:30pm at the Rye Recreation courts.
