Season Outlook is a new series for the 2024-25 academic year, where MyRye.com asks every varsity coach about the season ahead. Today, we learn about the Rye Varsity Baseball Team with Head Coach Michael Bruno.

The MLB baseball season is already underway, and the the high school slate is not far behind. For Bruno and the rest of the Garnets, the goal is the same: to win in the postseason.

“Every year our goals are to win the league and win the section,” Bruno told MyRye.com before the season. “That never changes year to year.”

Three players are set to lead the charge in Rye’s quest for a league title: senior captains Jack Sheridan, Vincent Sculti, and Charlie Rupp. “All three have been highly dedicated and motivated players for the program,” Bruno said of his trio of captains. They will be tasked with guiding the group both on and off the field as the team looks to improve upon the solid 13-8 record from 2024.

The Garnets play 20 games in about six weeks once league play begins, including two contests in Florida. “Spring is always a very quick season,” Bruno told MyRye.com. “Our annual trip down to Orlando during spring break will help us to move in the right direction.”

One of the 20 scheduled contests is against Harrison on May 10th. The Garnets look forward to this game every year for reasons that expand beyond the diamond. “Every year we play a memorial game to honor Andrew Gurgitano, a former Harrison baseball player who passed away suddenly at the age of 16,” Bruno said. “That game is about much more than a win or a loss. We are always honored that we can be a part of something so special for the Harrison baseball community.”

Bruno hopes the jam-packed regular season schedule, which concludes two days later against Eastchester, will allow his team to build and improve. He knows that Rye wants to be playing their best baseball by playoff time. Sixteen teams make the postseason, meaning Rye just needs to be hot at the right stretch of the season.

Rye’s first chance at a league win is at home on Tuesday, April 1st, as the Garnets host Eastchester at Disbrow Park. First pitch is scheduled for 4:30pm to get the fast-paced baseball season underway.
