In Memory: Robert Hayden Schofield, Age 91

Obituary - Robert Hayden SchofieldRobert Hayden Schofield, July 5, 1933- April 14, 2025. Bob Schofield, son of George and Annette Schofield, was born in Nyack, NY. He graduated with a BA from Princeton University in 1955. After graduation, he served in the US Navy from 1955-57, largely on the USS Benner in the Pacific. He graduated Tau Beta Pi with a Bachelor of Architecture from MIT in 1959, and then married his great love, Barbara Porter. At various times they had homes in Manhattan, Rye, NY, Palm Beach, Fl, and Little Compton, RI. He was managing partner at Schofield and Colgan Architects from 1977-1993, where the firm designed or expanded corporate headquarters, including for Union Camp Corporation and American Cyanamid. His school and university building projects included for Rye High School and Pace University. For his family, his most important project (with, he said, the most demanding clients) was designing their summer residence in Rhode Island.

In addition, Bob served on many boards, including the Vestry of the Trinity Church in Manhattan, The Osborn Home in Rye, and the Planning and Architectural Board of Review in Rye.

Bob was a man of great curiosity and intellect, with many interests and a generosity of spirit. He loved to play golf, fish, paint and to learn about a range of subjects including science, archeology, travel, history and art. He was a fine draughtsman, and he took up watercolor painting with great success, painting scenes in Rhode Island, Florida and their many travels, which brighten up homes in London and New York.

As a member of the Apawamis Club in Rye, Bob scored a hole-in-one two days before his 61st birthday! His golf won him many a hurricane lamp or other glass trophy over the years at the Sakonnet Golf Club, and he was very proud to have made it into the special ‘over 90’ membership categories at both this club and the Warren’s Point Beach Club. He enjoyed fishing and, for many years, taking his boat out at the Sakonnet Yacht Club. He was also an active member of the Everglades Club, Bath and Tennis Club, and the Crocodiles in Palm Beach.

Bob was predeceased by his son, Porter Hall Schofield, and is survived by his beloved wife of 65 years, Barbara, his son Robert Hayden Schofield, Jr, daughter Sarah Schofield Herzog, and grandchildren Robert (“Trip”) Hayden Schofield, III, Olivia Schofield, and Anna and Eliza Herzog.

His family and friends will remember him as a wonderful father and grandfather who shared and passed on his many interests and talents with grace. He will be sorely missed. A family service will be held in August in Little Compton.
